Travel to Berlin: From Prague to Palaces, History, and Biergartens
Traveling internationally can be stressful—but it doesn’t have to be. If you're planning to travel to Berlin, let me help. From a peaceful train ride through the Central European countryside to standing before the remnants of the Berlin Wall, Berlin is a place that balances its past with vibrant culture and living history. Join me on my journey from Prague to Berlin, with stops at historic landmarks, hidden markets, a biergarten, and a stunning day trip to Sanssouci Palace in nearby Potsdam.
The trip began with a train ride from Prague—an underrated gem in itself. The route takes around 4.5 hours and offers gorgeous views of the countryside: rolling hills, riverbanks, small towns, and open farmland. It's peaceful, affordable, and a great way to unwind before hitting the energy of Berlin.
Berlin wears its history openly. It’s emotional, powerful, and sometimes heavy—but it's also one of the most compelling cities I’ve ever visited.
Jewish Historical Museum
This museum is both architecturally stunning and emotionally profound. Inside, you'll find centuries of Jewish life in Germany—before, during, and after the Holocaust. Multimedia exhibits and personal artifacts make it immersive and impactful.
Day Trip from Berlin: Sanssouci Palace in Potsdam
One of the highlights of my Berlin trip wasn’t in Berlin—it was just outside of it. Sanssouci Palace, located in Potsdam (about 45 minutes by train), is a perfect day trip for anyone craving gardens, royal history, and stunning architecture.
Take the S-Bahn (S7) from Berlin Hauptbahnhof to Potsdam Hauptbahnhof. From there, it’s a short bus or walk to the palace grounds.
⏱️ Total travel time: ~45–60 minutes
Sanssouci is often called the "Versailles of Germany," and it lives up to the name. The Rococo-style palace is beautifully preserved, but the real magic is in the extensive terraced gardens, statues, and fountains that surround it.
🎧 Tip: Rent an audio guide or take a guided tour to understand the history of Frederick the Great and the Prussian court.
📸 Photo Spot: Climb to the top terrace behind the palace for a panoramic view of the grounds.
Berlin National Museum
Among the highlights of our trip was the Berlin National Museum—home to beautifully curated galleries of art, archaeology, and European history. What stood out most? Seeing Napoleon’s iconic bicorne hat in person.
That single artifact, displayed alongside 19th-century military regalia, adds a striking personal touch to the grand sweep of European history. Beyond that, the museum holds ancient sculptures, Prussian treasures, and impressive classical art collections.
📍 Located on Museum Island, it’s surrounded by Berlin’s most famous museums and worth setting aside at least half a day to explore.
🎧 Tip: Grab an audio guide to make the most of the exhibits if you’re short on time.
Biergarten Nights
One of the most “Berlin” things you can do? End the day in a biergarten. We spent the evening at Prater Garten, surrounded by locals, enjoying cold beers and hearty German food under twinkle lights and tall trees. It's unpretentious, welcoming, and a perfect way to unwind.
Why You Should Travel to Berlin (and Potsdam)
Berlin is one of those cities that stays with you. It challenges you to confront the past, then invites you to enjoy the present. From museums and memorials to music, markets, and imperial palaces, traveling to Berlin offers depth, contrast, and connection. It’s a place where your itinerary can include both Napoleon’s hat and a cold Berliner Weisse under the stars.
