Packing doesn’t have to feel overwhelming — and it definitely shouldn’t start the night before your trip. Whether you’re heading to Disney, Europe, the Caribbean, or anywhere in between, having a clear packing strategy can save you time, stress, and even money.
This travel packing guide breaks everything down into carry-ons vs checked luggage, with smart tips based on trip length, destination, and amenities — so you can travel prepared, not overloaded. Check out my YouTube video on packing 30 days out - click here

Start With the Right Carry-On Setup
I always recommend one of these two carry-on combinations:
Backpack + duffle bag
Backpack + rolling suitcase (under 19”)
This setup keeps your essentials close, organized, and compliant with most airline size restrictions.
Carry-On Packing List (Must-Haves)
Your carry-on should cover you for at least 24–48 hours in case of delays or lost.
Essentials

Travel documents (ID/passport, tickets, insurance info)
Wallet + small amount of cash
Phone, chargers, power bank
Medications (never pack these in checked bags)
Glasses or contacts
Comfort & Backup
One change of clothes
Lightweight jacket or layer
Toiletry basics 3-1-1 (TSA-approved sizes)
Reusable water bottle
Snacks
Pro Tip: If you’re traveling somewhere warm, always pack a swimsuit in your carry-on. It’s the one item people regret forgetting when bags are delayed.
Checked Luggage: Choose Based on Trip Length & Group Size
There’s no one-size-fits-all rule for checked luggage — it should match how long you’re traveling and who you’re traveling with.
General Size Guidelines (Based on packing for just yourself)
2–3 days: Carry-ons only or small checked bag
4–9 days: Medium checked suitcase
10+ days or multiple climates: Large checked suitcase
Families or multi-gen trips: Consider shared luggage to reduce bag count
What Goes in Checked Luggage
Full-size toiletries
Shoes (pack in shoe bags)
Weather-specific clothing
Dressy outfits or special-event attire
Bulky items (jackets, jeans, sweaters)
Pack Smarter by Considering Your Destination
Your location should influence what you pack — not just how much.
Climate & Culture
Tropical destinations = breathable fabrics, fewer layers
Europe or cities = comfortable walking shoes are non-negotiable
Conservative countries = modest clothing requirements
Amenities Matter
Before overpacking, ask:
Does my hotel or cruise ship offer on-site laundry?
Is there a hair dryer, iron, or beach towels provided?
Are toiletries included?
If laundry is available, you can pack fewer clothes and plan mid-trip washes — a game changer for longer vacations.
Don’t Forget Customs & Destination Rules
This step is often overlooked and incredibly important.
Before traveling internationally:
Check customs regulations for your destination
Confirm what food, medications, alcohol, or gifts are restricted
Review airline rules for lithium batteries, liquids, and specialty items
Packing something that isn’t allowed can lead to delays, fines, or items being confiscated — and it’s completely avoidable with a quick check.
Final Packing Tips From a Travel Pro
Lay everything out before packing
Roll clothes instead of folding to save space
Use packing cubes for organization or vacuum seal bags for extended travel
Leave room for souvenirs
